Top U-Pick Farms

For more than a decade, Tennesseans have enthusiastically embraced the farm-to-table movement. Our abundance of local agriculture means that no matter where you live in Middle Tennessee, you’re likely no more than a quick drive from an independent farm. Today, we’re spotlighting the Top Ten U-Pick Farms in Middle TN.

U-Pick farms invite members of the community to visit and pick their own produce. This experience is a great way to connect with the people who grow our food, with nature, and with each other. Children are often especially enchanted with the idea of picking their own food, which makes this an ideal method for encouraging fruit and vegetable consumption.

Tennessee’s Growing Seasons

While some of our favorite farms focus on one specific crop, others offer rotating selections as they come into season. While the weather we’ve experienced in any given year influences these dates, the following is a general guide to our region’s growing seasons.

Around the middle of April, strawberries first become ripe. By the end of May, most strawberry farms are closing out the season.

By mid-June, we may be lucky enough to have some early peaches. Two weeks later, all peaches will be perfectly ripe, with the season ending by mid-to-late August.

Next, we can pick blueberries and blackberries. These berries are first available in late June and early July. Because blueberries are more delicate, their season draws to a close by the end of August. Blackberries, on the other hand, can occasionally be picked throughout September.

While varieties of apple ripen at different times, apple season explodes in August and September. A few varieties are ready to eat in June, and some late varieties don’t ripen until October. Still, most U-Pick orchards are closed by mid-October.

Due to the ever-shifting whims of mother nature, it’s a good idea to call a farm or check their social media profiles for updates before driving out to pick your produce. Farmers are always happy to share news about what’s ripe and ready for picking!
